The ' Regular or Standard' 8mm film format was developed by Kodak during the Great Depression, it was unveiled to the general public in 1932 with the intention of offering a lower cost option for home movie makers over the 16mm format that was released in 1923. The film actually is 16mm film with twice as many sprocket holes. The footage was recorded on both sides. The 8mm film was exposed on one side of the film, then once it had been used, the film would be flipped and the spool was then exposed on the other side. Once used, the movie film was sent off to be developed and split down the middle and spliced together to make a 50ft reel of 8mm film each with a single edge of sprocket holes on the edge. With this process using 16mm film, it yielded 4 x as much footage on the same amount of surface space as 16mm, hence the cost savings. Due to the two passes of the film, the format was also dubbed as Double 8. 1 meter Because of the two passes of the film, the format was sometimes called Double 8. 50ft feet of film contains approx 4000 images. Typical frame rate of regular 8mm is 16fps. The challenge now is to digitally convert the 8mm film to formats of today.
